Touching Spirit Bear

Please answer any one of the following three prompts using complete and detailed sentences. Your response should be a solid paragraph in order to receive the bonus points on your future novel test (3 points).

1. If there was a portion of the novel Touching Spirit Bear that you would like to rewrite, what would it be and why? Why do you think that scene needs to be improved and how do you think your idea would make the story better?

2. Rumor has it that the rights have been purchased to eventually turn Touching Spirit Bear into a movie. Who would you cast for the characters of: Cole, Garvey, Cole's parents, and Peter? Justify your cast for this movie (describe what parts of the character would match with the chosen actors).

3. Out of the three novels we read this year as a class (Fever 1793, Touching Spirit Bear, and Wednesday Wars) what was your favorite read and why?

  1. Hey! I'm going to answer question three. I think that Wenesday Wars was the best book we've read this year, because it was not as serious and it always kept you laughing. Fever is probably my second favorite because I like the historical aspect and how you learned something new about the epidemic. Spirit Bear has been an okay book so far, I still like the others better though. Thanks:)

  2. Out of the 3 books that we have read in class, I would say that my favorite would be Fever 1793 because it was very sad in some parts. But it had some very interesting facts that I didn't even know! Before we actually started reading the book, I didn't even know what the Fever was in 1793. I just thought it was a made up story.

  3. I would rewrite the opening chapters in Touching Spirit Bear. Ben Mikaelson should've started at the beginning and not the time on the island because most readers would get really confused. I would've started with Peter's issue with Cole and move through the Circle Justice meetings, and then tell about the island. I also think he could've shortened the time when Cole was lying helpless after the spirit bear mauling.

  7. 1. I think that I would quite possibly rewrite the scene in "Touching Spirit Bear" where Cole starts the fire with the supplies that Garvey gives him. I would rewrite it because I do not feel that it is detailed enough. Ben Mikaelsen could've put much more effort into that scene. It would've leveled out the effort that he put into the entire book. It seemed almost as if he got lazy about it.

    2. I would most likely cast Justin Long as Cole because he seems pretty serious when he's acting, and I feel like he has that kind of aggressive attitude. I would cast Eric Schweig as Garvey because he looks like a native indian, and I think that he could be funny, but he also looks like someone that would teach. I would cast Angelina Jolie as Cole's mother because she looks like she might be a young mother with an alcohol problem. Lastly, I would cast Ethan Hawke as Cole's father becuase he seems to be a father figure, but he could also have a very violent side to him.

    3. My favorite book that we'd read this year would definitely have to be "Wednesday Wars" because it always kept you interested. I don't think there was ever a part when we were reading that I was bored and was easily distracted. It chronicled the adventures of an average 7th grader, and that made it so much easier to relate to.

  8. 1. I wold rewrite the part where he beats up peter and lies about what he did.

    2. I would put haden chirstensen as cole because he has the experience for it. For peter I would put Ewan McGregor he has faught with Haden. For garvey I would put Danel Radcliffe because he would be he best fit for the job. For cole's mother I would put Jeniffer Aniston because she has played moms befor. For his dad I would put joney depp because he has been people who have to beet up others.

    3. My favorite book we read this year is touching spirit bear I can relate to most of the carachters manly peter because I have been beaten up in the past

  10. Hi:) Im gonna answer #3
&& Fever would have to be my favorite novel because it was very interesting. I liked how it described the scences of the disease and how they looked when they were dead. The characters were very interesting in every way because they each had their own personality and acted in their own way. This book really discribed how people back then were treated and how they had to live. That's why I liked this book the best.

  18. I Liked Wednesday Wars the best. Spirit Bear was good but very serious. I liked the historical element in Fever though. Grandfather was cool. Wednesday Wars always was funny, but sometimes it was sad too, and parts of it almost made me cry. Almost.
As for who should be in the movie, I think Arnold Schwarzenegger should be Cole. I would die laughing. Blaise

Fever 1793 was actually a little boring cause the setting was in the past and I geuss I just didnt like it. Wendesday Wars was a pretty good book to it was hilaious at some parts but I think the surprising and the shoking parts of Touching Spirit Bear was more interseting to me.

  24. My favorite story that we read this year is 'touching spirit bear' because of the situation. I dont like it how people get hurt but that stuff really happens and its intresting. its hard to explain. And how he deals with his anger at first its really bad but now after a year and some odd months he has taken advantage of himself. i think its pretty cool

It is a very entertaining book and that it has a lot of entertaining parts in it that keep me captivated so I never want to stop reading. 35. I am going to answer question 1. I would rewrite the part where he is just laying there, hurt, for three chapters...that part was really boring for me to read. I would've made him try to struggle to stand and get back to his camp or have Garvy and Edwin come faster so that part wouldn't drag on like it did.

  36. FROM SAVANNA GLEE! Ello mate! Ok i'm going to answer number 3! Out of the books this year Fever was always and forever the best out of all the books we read this year! I liked it because it made me keep reading even though i hate to read! Every chapter was exciting, or sad, or just happy! Mixed emotions is a good way to keep it interesting! Plus i LOVE learning more about the olden days! It makes me wonder what it would be like to like then and sometimes wishing i would live then even though it would be a hard life i would be in history! Love, Savanna Glee

  37. I really wouldn't want to rewrite any part. Except for the first half because he kept switching back in forth between the island and Circle Justice it got really confusing sometimes.
I would want to make it so he would stay on one topic and wait until the next chapter to switch topics.

  38. 1. I have to agree with Shiloh. I believe that the passage in which Cole had burnt his supplies could've been written with a little more passion. What I mean is, an agressive teenage boy is basically knocking out all the supplies and necessities he needs to survive and all he does is stare into the pretty flames? Rather weak.

    Ashley L.

    2. If I was to cast anyone for the role of Cole I would personally ask if Robert Pattinson were up for it. We need to feed the rabid fangirl obsession somehow. I'd say Dakota Fanning would do well in the abused housewife role of Cole's mother. She seems to be young and ambitious and has starred in a few well-scripted dramas during her time as an actoress. Cole's father would be harder to cast, I was personally thinking somewhere along the lines of Sam Worthington. He doesn't give off that 'horrible husband' look but he has some refined skills as an actor. If we prep him up a bit Im sure he'd look the part.

    3. 'Fever 1793' was definately a favorite for me. I loved the way it tied itself in with history, it really did bring in some perspective of the suffering those people had to go through. The strong-willed main character was my favorite, she was very opinianated and stuborn.

  39. 1. I think he could've written the mouse scene better. I did not like all of the details. I would've just had him keep eating bugs, or maybe a small rabbit. It didn't ruin the book though.

    2. I think Sam Worthington should be Cole's dad just because He looks about the age and I think he can play the part. Sigourney Weaver should be Coles mom because she would be able to nail the ignorant mom and caring mom. Rupert Grint should be Peter because he just has that Please leave me alone look about him. Robert Pattinson should be Cole, he just looks like he could be the mean bully. Chaske Spencer should play arvey because he is just the kind type of person

  40. I would want to be cole because it would be fun to stay on an island. And to see a bear. It would be cool because no one is with you. Another reason is it would be hard to live on an island.

I think that in spirit bear I would change the last chapter a little more to make it feel as if you were actually in it like comparing how he felt to some things that can happen in real life. MOMO

  43. Hey! I really liked all the books we read this year, I thought they were all very interesting! But,.... if i had to pick one book it would probally have to be Fever. I don't ever find historical books that are interesting and that keep me excited to read the next page! It's hard to pick a favorite book because I really enjoyed them all! Touching Spirit Bear was good as well! I think they should make it a movie!!
